Curated, not computer-generated

Every rhyming site on the internet is reading from the same public pronunciation file, and a computer will cheerfully hand you every last thing in it: words stressed on the wrong syllable, spellings nobody has ever written down, the plural of a word that hasn’t got one. That is not the computer’s fault. It is doing its best, and it has never had to finish a chorus.

RhymeHamster is that same file after a working lyricist went through it and said no a few thousand times. Every rhyme in here was picked by somebody who writes songs. The lists are shorter on purpose — anyone can hand you a computer-generated list, but it takes a real human (and a hamster with opinions) to edit it into a great one.

Rhymes grouped by sound, not listed by syllable

Most rhyming sites hand you one long alphabetical list per syllable count. RhymeHamster groups results by sound family, so the rhymes that actually belong together sit together — and multi-word rhymes show up where they should, not buried at the bottom.

Perfect means perfect

Every rhyme group in RhymeHamster has been ruled on, word by word. When a source dictionary mis-stresses a word — and the standard pronunciation data mis-stresses plenty — the entry gets fixed rather than shipped. Slant rhymes are in here too, but always labeled as slant, never mixed in with the perfect rhymes and left for you to sort out.

A dictionary you can talk back to

Thought of a rhyme we missed? Send it in, right from the page — every suggestion goes straight to HamsterCentral, where it gets read by a human and judged by a hamster, and the good ones join the dictionary for everybody. Rhymes that don’t exist yet

When the dictionary runs out, RhymeHamster starts inventing: one tree for country, forkable for adorkable. Every stretch rhyme is a word English could have made but didn’t.

Internal rhymes

Rhymes don’t only live at the ends of words. Hover any headword and the WordNibbler^HM finds the rhymes hiding inside it — the per in permit, the dip in serendipity. Find rhymes everywhere.

Wildcard rhymes

Every other rhyming dictionary can only hand you what is already filed in it. Here, hover the word on the count line and every sound in it turns into a wildcard (*). Free a letter — any letter — and RhymeHamster hunts down every word that fits the new shape: permit opens onto summit, limit and vomit; candle onto scandal.
